Directions:
Take St.
Margaret's Bay Road from the Armdale Rotary there is a
small parking lot on your left just before the road leading to Exhibition Park.
Description:
There are trails on both sides of the stream that runs next to the parking lot.
On the parking lot side the trail follows the stream down to the lake on a gravel trail that was maintained as access to the water supply. The trail passes by a small beach, great for playing with the dogs or swimming. After you pass the beach the old road/trail bends up hill away from the lake. Pre-pare for rocky washed out trail roads and muddy paths in this section during wet times of the year. This trail will take hikers out behind Exhibition Park. At this point you can cross the small brook (the bridge was washed out a long time ago on this old road) and follow through to the old coach road, which comes out of Spryfield near the Old Sambro Road. Just as you see the stream you can take a trail that follows the stream back down to Long Lake and then follow the path along the water's edge back to the main trail and to the parking lot where you started. Following the stream will take you past a small waterfall on this trail.
If you cross to the opposite side of the stream at the parking lot you have many kilometers of unmarked trails. Most of the original trails were created by mountain bikers and hikers many years ago. However, years of unregulated use have seen these trails taken over by dog walkers with inappropriate footwear who walk around puddles creating huge puddles and major soil erosion. This means that the actual trail direction can be confusing especially since the trails were designed to follow terrain features not necessarily to have a destination in mind. There are many loops and you can go as far as Cowie Hill even accessing other lakes. I recommend sticking to the shoreline until you are familiar with the location. |
