Fishing Cove

Directions:

Head north from Cheticamp and into the Highlands National Park. Just a few kilometers into the Park on top of MacKenzie Mountain the Trail head parking lot is on the left.

Description:

Fishing Cove is a really neat destination just inside the Highlands National Park on the Cheticamp side. You have two choices to get in to the old abandoned fishing village an 8km walk or a 4km walk. The 4km walk is a steep 45 minute hike, however I recommend the 3 hour 8km hike. The longer hike follows a river valley as it winds between mountains and only really gets strenuous in short bursts but overall it is gentle.

The campsite is an open field with small hills on both sides with tent pads to pitch your tent on. There is a large pond where the river flows through the beach into the ocean. This setting makes for a very picturesque area that is definately worth the hike and spending a night. We saw a pod of whales breaching while we ate dinner and two bald eagles soared overhead.

I recommend making the trip to Fishing Cove no matter which trail you hike. This is a beautiful part of Nova Scotia and is not to be missed.
